Advanced Settings

Additional settings for Internet telephony can be configured on the "Advanced Settings" page.

Use fixed-line substitute connection

If it is not possible to dial a call over the Internet, the connection is automatically established using the fixed-line network. An acoustic signal informs you that the connection will be established using the fixed-line network (two short tones followed by a long one).

Location information

Internet phone connections can only be established when the party's complete number is entered, including the country and area code.

Enter your country and area code in the location information so that you can continue to make local calls without having to add this information to local numbers. The FRITZ!Box will then add the required prefixes automatically.

Use Voice Activation Detection (VAD)

When this setting is enabled, pauses in speech during an Internet call are detected. No data are transmitted during this time. This thus reduces saves online charges by reducing the amount of data transmitted.

Note: Enabling VAD can result in impaired voice quality on the remote site.

Selecting How Telephone Calls Use the Bandwidth of the DSL Connection

The voice compression preset in FRITZ!Box automatically adapts to the available bandwidth and the number of calls being conducted at the given time. You can also configure static voice compression.

  • automatic selection of voice coding (recommended)
With this selection, voice coding is automatically adapted dynamically to the available DSL bandwidth and the number of calls being conducted at the given time.
  • always use voice coding in fixed-line network quality
With this selection the voice coding used will always prevent any loss in quality.
If your DSL line has limited bandwidth, you should not use this selection, because some calls may not be conducted or it may not be possible to conduct multiple calls at the same time.
  • always use voice coding with compression
If your DSL line has only a restricted bandwidth available, you may wish to use this option. The voice compression will always be performed, restricting the data volume available for Internet telephony.

Indicate Type of Service

With this setting you can assign values to the IP packets used for voice transmission. The values are written to the relevant IP packets so that they can be distinguished from other IP packets. Marking the voice packets in this way makes it possible for routers that support this indication to handle voice data preferentially.

Use additional connection for Internet telephony via DSL (PVC)

With an additional connection for Internet telephony over DSL, the telephony data can be transmitted separately from the data coming from the computer. Instead, the FRITZ!Box establishes another ATM connection using the same ADSL line.
This function must be supported by both your ADSL provider and your Internet telephony carrier. Contact your ADSL provider to find out which settings are required for this function.

Fax transmission also with T.38

Enable this option if your Internet telephony provider uses the T.38 standard.

Click the "Apply" button to implement your changes to the settings.
